In this video for “Hometown,” from UK (but not exactly local) darlings The Hugs, the band plays their stripped-down rock in a dimly lit room, before hitting a restaurant for a regrettable, too stoned to really talk, interview. Along the way, they pass a Mercury box, where singer Danny Delegato takes out our paper, flips through it, then tosses it to the ground and mumbles, what I believe is, “Fuck the Mercury.”
Well played young buck. Way to document the destruction of the one paper that has gone out of its way to praise your little band, even when you guys were still working the High School Battle of the Bands circuit. But given the band’s past history of making some very very very very stupid decisions, this shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. Anyway, I don’t have issue with the “Fuck the Mercury” thing (if he actually said it, since the quality of the video is Zapruder-esque, plus he has a good point…), just don’t litter like that, since your mommies aren’t always around to pick up after you, okay?
Danny Delegato may actually be a true narcissist.
seems little huggy needs a hug and to repeat 2nd grade. his grammar sucks. also, does he not know that press people get into 'sold out' shows? this kid seems to think his band had something/anything to do with the fact that the show in question is sold-out. throwing a newspaper to the ground and talking about worms? this speaks volumes about those diminutive douchebags' life-experience. the song? it's truly awful. well-done portland. the hugs are your uglier version of hanson minus the hooks.
'the hugs' (worst band name EVER) need to start thinking about a future outside of music.
The Hugs are great. So much hate towards them though, so sad.
Danny is truly right, these newspapers/journalists just rip apart anything they know could be great one day. In no way did the mercury "praise" the hugs ever. Let the music shine through boys! The Hugs are a great band with a big future ahead of them. This video is funny, very brave of the band too do that.
"All that you have said in the past is not praising our band! This is being intentionally mean to a young hopeful band who never did anything but work hard for what they have got in front of them. Do you people realize that I have played music for ten years of my life? Eight years out of that I was a struggling indie musician like anyone else in this so called "indie center" town."
you could play music for 20 years of your life and still have nothing else to say besides sha sha sha sha waaaaooo. oh you pooor eleven year old it must have been hard being a starving artist during nap time.
First off Mr. EAC I never said "Fuck the mercury" I said "Fuck Portland". Maybe it was a mix between portland and the mercury now that I recall.
And secondly you never "praised" us at all you merely deconstructed and patronized us! And our band's sound comparing us to pavement? and saying things like:
" Soon they develop a row with another band—oh, let's say Razorlight—and someone calls someone else a "bloody wanker." They play Glastonbury and the Carling Weekend, and the whole thing spirals out of control after a trip to Ibiza with Pete Doherty and Liam Gallagher. Enjoy it while you can, boys."
EAC
We waited years for the portland mercury to write something about us and in the end all we got was that? Does that seem right?
On top of starting the "hate the hugs" vibe in portland! You or someone wrote "How could anyone hate the hugs?" on the god damn front cover of your issue with us inside last May.
And "Your new favorite band"? What kind of bullshit is that? It's pretty un-called for. And you know it. We know there is some 'good people' at the mercury, shame we never had them write about The Hugs.
All that you have said in the past is not praising our band! This is being intentionally mean to a young hopeful band who never did anything but work hard for what they have got in front of them. Do you people realize that I have played music for ten years of my life? Eight years out of that I was a struggling indie musician like anyone else in this so called "indie center" town.
And it was not us who stole the guitars from You Am I. We had nothing to do with it and expelled him from the band that night. We actually make very very very very good smart decisions. You obviously don't think about or care about what you say about bands. It affects them and the enviroment. All you have done is caused us "Un-characteristic pressure" with your words. That's why we made this video.
Writing negative things about a band who has positive things going for them is not a new thing, we know that.
It's quite childish to be honest. I can't wait until we actually play Carling weekend and Glastonbury next year and things don't spiral out of control as you claim they will. Instead we sell millions of records and make you look like a complete idiot.
Go back to your where you came from dude. And oh yeah keep writing about The Hugs, it could save your job one day. Seeya at the Wonder Ballroom on the 26th of May W/ The Kooks? Oh wait i'm sorry it's already soldout. Maybe next time. Cheers Bud!
