Tonight! The Detroit Cobras - Good Covers, Great Album Covers

SNAKE CHARMERS—Slink along to the vintage garage nuggets unearthed by the Detroit Cobras, perhaps the world’s best cover band. It’s rock ’n’ soul shaking, with full-throttle octane that could only come from the Motor City.
Okay, I guess I don’t really think the Detroit Cobras are the world’s greatest cover band (who should that title go to? The new No Age cover band that includes an actual member of No Age?), but they really jump-started the whole retro garage revival at the turn of the century and are still going strong. They also have some great, sleazy album covers, as you will see in the collected gallery posted after the jump. Enjoy!

i don't think the detroit cobras have any original songs, do they? i love how they turn pretty much anything into a detroit cobras song, though. they're probably the only [or, at the very least, the most well-known] band that covers more than one artist.

i may have to disagree: the detroit cobras might very well be the best cover band in the world.

Except that they're totally boring. I've rarely seen a "garage rock" band fail to break a sweat, but these guys didn't even come close. They looked positively bored onstage. And if you like their somewhat obvious selections drained of life and puked back out using the same cookie-cutter arrangement every time, then by all means attend this show.

Their only original song is "Hot Dog" on Baby.

REGF: If you've only seen them once, it's sure possible they took the night off without announcing it. This hasn't been my experience, and I've seen them 4 times. I hear lots of variety in their arrangements. Maybe you haven't listened to the original versions of songs they cover. They sure aren't just regurgitating old tunes.

And another thing ...

... I don't understand why people insist on calling them a garage band. Maybe it's because they're from Detroit and get associated with bands like the Dirtbombs and the Gore Gore Girls. To me, they're soul or R&B.
