Sure, we all like America, but blogs like this one have spent far too long nursing on democracy's bosom and not doing anything--it's time we take some goddamn action for this country of ours. So in honor of tomorrow being the Fourth of July, we have devoted today's posts to a little thing we like to call "Freedom Thursday."
Songs about America the great, America the not-so-great, and everything in between.
First up, the whimsical Simon and Garfunkel tale, "America." Back before he was getting wacky in videos with Chevy Chase, Paul Simon was a young man out on the open road who, like so many others, had "All gone to look for America." And Simon knows that if this country is good for anything, it's good for roadtrips. From the "Greyhound in Pittsburgh" to the "four days to hitchhike from Saginaw," Simon and his travel companion (Kathy) get lost looking for something (Themselves? America? That last cigarette?) as our country's vast scenery blurs by.
