Have you ever noticed that the vocals on Yo La Tengo's "Stockholm Syndrome" are suspiciously close to sounding like this guy? Yeah, I hadn't either until a friend pointed it out last night, and you know what? She's right! That song is kind of Grateful Dead-esque. Take that, hipsters!
Seriously, though: take away the god-awful fans, take away the numerous jam bands they inspired, take away those stupid dancing bears, and, you know, the Grateful Dead are not that bad, at least not as bad as everyone besides burnouts, potheads, and my dad seem to think they are. I realize that last sentence may mean I have to turn in my indie-cred card immediately, but I don't really care. I think automatically hating the Dead is a little ridiculous, and I am officially going on record as saying such.
Plus, have you listened to "Touch Of Grey" lately? That song is amazing! The video: not so much. I know it's a late-era pop song or whatever, and not really indicative of their sound necessarily, but every time I hear it I get insanely happy. In terms of "I'm gonna be OK" songs, I'd rank it right up there with this gem. Clearly I'd take John Darnielle and company over the Dead every single time, without question, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy slapping on some tie-dye every once in awhile, does it?
