Bandago Comes to Portland

Vroom! Vroom!

Almost three years ago (to the day) I wrote about Bandago, the independent van rental company for musicians, by musicians, and now word comes in that they have opened a Portland office.

Turns out that the local office (2617 SE 17th) has been open for a few months now, but the company is still establishing itself in town (and in Seattle, which I assume is a large market for them as well). Since Bandago is "the first van rental company in the US to be 100% carbon neutral," I think they'll fit in just fine here in Portland.

Their band-friendly vans are primed for touring, and their fancy Sprinter model even feature wi-fi, since everyone knows a band that doesn't update their MySpace blog is an irrelevant band. It's not the most affordable option (not touring is), but it's a perfect fit for traveling acts that don't own have a reliable ride of their own.

Just to be clear, the Sprinters get 25 mpg, 180 square feet internal storage ( enough for drum kits, amps, keys, etc ), and hold 9 people.

So, you could have three trios touring, and sharing backline no problem. Not many cars I know will get 25 mpg while pulling a trailer.

All the vehicles have dvd screens and game systems ( XBox / PS2 ), and some have internet and gps. The vehicles also have 24 hour assistance....pretty sweet.

Christina-

Check your math.

Diesel is $5 a gallon. ( Actually less )
Regular is $4 a gallon. ( Actually more )

To go one thousand miles, you need 40 gallons of diesel@ 25 mpg. For regular gas @ 15 mpg you would need 66 gallons.

40 x 5 = $200
66 x 4 = $274

That's just for one thousand miles. Also regular vehicles need oil changes three times more often than diesel.

So, split between 8 people, the total operating cost of the Sprinter vehicles is about $14/day, traveling 600 miles a day. Love to see your breakdown of a cheaper vehicle that has anywhere close to the level of comfort....
