Grouper - Tonight!

Posted by Rob Simonsen on Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Last week I came to a somewhat startling realization: on the "Top 25" playlist on my iPod, about five tracks from Grouper's ridiculously amazing Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill popped up. I've had my iPod for over a year, and that Grouper record for only a month, yet the thing has already managed to sneak its way to the top. Obviously, to say that it has been on heavy rotation is putting it lightly.

Dragging a Dead Deer is just downright stunning. The melodies are hauntingly beautiful, and having these sort of pop songs buried underneath mountains of murky liquid only adds to the chilliness of the record. The songs manage to be gorgeous and heartbreaking at the same time. They sound distant yet eerily familiar, aloof yet engaging. The song below, "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping," is one of the standout tracks, with the guitar gently strumming along, really letting those vocal harmonies stand out. I still have no idea what any of the words are in this song other than "I'd rather be sleeping" and the occasional water reference ("tidal waves" and "deep ends"?), but that doesn't stop me from getting chills every single time.

Grouper - "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping"

I realize this week is a little out of control show wise, but if you're after a little calm before the storm, I can't recommend heading down to Holocene tonight enough.

Grouper plays Holocene tonight alongside Jana Hunter and Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez. Show at 9pm. $8.
