My Bloody Valentine Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)

Posted by Rob Simonsen on Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Last night I saw My Bloody Valentine live in Los Angeles. And how was it?

Jesusholyohmygodohmygodohmygod.

Well, obviously I was gonna lose my shit, seeing as how Loveless is my favorite record ever. Even if the show was lackluster, the prospect of seeing "Come in Alone" live outweighs any pitfalls the band may have fallen into. But, that being said, they exceeded any expectations I may have had, making the trek fully worth every penny.

Sitting through Spectrum and Gemma Hayes was more than painful, as was the twenty minutes it took MBV to take the stage after the house lights went down. But, once they finally did, everything washed away -- every ounce of anxious anticipation, every doubt, every fear -- as the band blasted through opener "I Only Said." Beyond the ridiculous amounts of noise, the thing that stuck out most was the lights: strobes flashed so brightly and so fast that there was often nowhere else to look other than the floor, which, ironically, the band seemed to rarely do themselves.

MBV basically played a greatest hits set, most of everything off of Loveless, including a ridiculously great version of "Soon." And, you know, as much credit due to Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher (the two on guitars and vocals), the two that kind of stole the show were drummer Colm O'Ciosoig and bassist Debbie Googe. That rhythm section held the entire show together, the low end hitting so loud and hard it almost felt like getting punched in the chest. Literally. And, you know, feeling the bass shake through every part of your body is pretty incredible.

The Isn't Anything material actually seemed to translate a bit better in a live setting. The band just rocked out harder for "You Never Should," "Nothing Much To Lose," and "(When You Wake) You're Still in a Dream." And, also, on that earlier material, there weren't a hundred guitar tracks like there was on Loveless. Shields and Butcher did a ridiculous job making their songs translate live, for sure, but on a track like "Only Shallow" -- a song with one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time -- Shields couldn't quite capture the magic and beauty of the recorded version. But, again, that is not to say that the song wasn't amazing, because it was. Absolutely.

The only thing that could have been nitpicked were the vocals, which, admittedly, were a bit subdued. If I hadn't known the words to every song, at points I would've been lost. Trying to pick out words underneath the swell of guitars was tough, though with MBV, vocals were never the point.

And yes, it was loud. LOUD. Easily the loudest thing I have ever experienced. And the highlight, in terms of the set and the loudness, came with the last song, "You Made Me Realise," a twenty plus minute opus that saw them jamming for roughly eighteen of those minutes on sheer noise. After the brief opening lines, the band stopped dead in their tracks, blasting the crowd with an amps to eleven assault that clearly baffled more than a few people. I can't even begin to describe what the feeling was, of having the noise rush over you and literally melt into your skin. With earplugs in I still felt as though my ears were on the verge of bleeding, though it didn't matter since the warm blanket of feedback was so stunning.

Seeing My Bloody Valentine was something that I never thought I would get the chance to do, and I am definitely happy that I did. The band was amazing live. Here's to hoping there are many more tours in their near future, as well as new material. Please, guys. Please?!

Did they play anything off Ecstasy and Wine? That's... kind of my favorite album/material of theirs. I would loooove to hear (Please) Lose Yourself in Me!
