Sigur Ros - "Svefn-g-englar" [Live in Philadelphia, Sept 22, 2001]
Here's Icelandic band Sigur Ros playing what could be called their first US "hit"--it was the first song I became familiar with, at least. This is footage from their 2001 tour. I saw this tour two days later, when it hit the Beacon Theater in New York City. Coming just days after the September 11 attacks, it was a raw, emotional time, and as soothing as this particular song is, I remember most of their set being made up of the dark, disturbing material that later found its way onto () [the parenthesis album] the following year. The concert was a harrowing glimpse into blackness, and I recall being genuinely fearful--the apocalypse felt like it was breathing down our necks. Of course, living in New York got easier, and so has listening to Sigur Ros. After the chilling void of (), they released Takk..., which was uplifting and bright, and have just released another unpronounceable, untype-able album which may be their most conventional work to date. I haven't seen Sigur Ros live since 2001, and I won't tonight--the show at the Schnitz is sold out.
