ILL BILL, SEAN PRICE, GRAY MATTERS
(Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 SE 39th) Ah, there's nothing quite like some good ol' coke-snorting, illuminati-capping, BKNY thuggery to set your evening off perfectly. Emcee/producer Ill Bill, former anchor of Non Phixion, runs the prolific Uncle Howie Records and commands an admiral's respect among lovers of grimy underground hiphop. Now add Sean Price, a rapper who made that rare conversion from major-label underground emcee in the '90s (as one half of Boot Camp Click duo Heltah Skeltah), to major love in the post-millenium indie-hop game. Price's gruff bars are about as subtle as a punch in the face, and old school like getting your shoes, jacket, and hat taken. They just don't rap like that anymore. LARRY MIZELL JR.

LKN, PALO VERDE, HARSH SUNSHINE
(Valentine's, 232 SW Ankeny) It's the release show for vinyl edition of LKN's Postulate II album on Phratry Records; the vinyl's been out for a couple months already, but why not celebrate? The album comes packaged with a compact disc (remember those?) that contains a bonus EP. On record, LKN (Lauren K. Newman) plays all the instruments herself-thunderously pounding drums, shredding guitar, vocals that go from a low growl to a bloodcurdling shriek-recording each part in a single take, resulting in music that is spontaneous and raw. Live, she's joined by Palo Verde bandmate Terrica Kleinknecht, and the two switch off on guitar and drums while Bobby Dezfulli anchors the bass. It's an invigorating, mindblowing experience to be in the same room as a band this explosive, this heavy, and this fucking rad. NL

DEERHOOF, EXPERIMENTAL DENTAL SCHOOL
(Wonder Ballroom, 128 NE Russell) Who does a freaky-ass combo like Deerhoof think they are, being so downright sunny? Apparently, somewhere in between the Minutemen and Shonen Knife exists a magical, mystical place, a locale where Satomi Matsuzaki's bizarro melodies and lilting pigeon-coo roosts in the lofty upper reaches of bandmates Greg Saunier and John Dieterich's experimental beat-smart stop-start art rock. With each new release, the glitchy trio's music gets a touch more pop, and more unexpectedly gorgeous-which only sends their weirdness quotient higher into orbit. LM
