Well, not really. It's three dates--not especially long. And all the dates are within 1.5 miles of each other.
It's Blue Giant's Portland Tour '08, and tonight sees them kicking off at Holocene before crossing the mighty Willamette for Wednesday's show, then coming back east again for Thursday's show at the Doug Fir. (Jeez, guys, who booked this tour? Looks like you're doubling back on yourselves.) This tour-in-miniature could be indicative of a few things: (1) High gas prices and a tumbling dollar are making standard coast-to-coast tours cost-prohibitive. (2) Portland's got enough cool venues and showgoers to sustain a three-night stand. (3) Blue Giant has some tricks up their sleeve and this is a fun way to do it.
Let's look at (3). Each night the Portland supergroup (which includes Kevin and Anita Robinson from Viva Voce, Seth Lorinczi from the Golden Bears, Evan Railton from the Swords Project, and Chris Funk of the Decemberists) will be opened by a different band (Golden Bears tonight, Norfolk & Western tomorrow, Portland Cello Project on Thursday). Each night will feature a special guest (including Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney, Sam Coomes of Quasi, Rachel Blumberg of the Decemberists and N&W, and Corinna Repp of Tu Fawning), and Thursday's Doug Fir show is an "all organic collaborative evening" with the Portland Cello Project. Sounds like you could hit all three shows and see something unique each time.
Tonight's show at Holocene should be extra good, because the Golden Bears are opening. I love this band, which I've mentioned before, and you can stream their stupendously good album Wall to Wall by going here. See you at the show tonight.
