It's hard to write about Belle & Sebastian and not think about the greatest scene from High Fidelity. Yes, it's even better than that part where Lisa Bonet covers Peter Frampton. Know what the least accurate part of that movie was (besides John Cusack's hair)? That dudes who work at record stores get laid.
Zing.
Anyway, I'm not here to post about the cinematic works for a young Jack Black, I'm here to talk about the wonderful new BBC Sessions record from the "sad bastards" in Belle & Sebastian. Out next Tuesday, the double disc set features 14 songs from various BBC sessions (um, hence the name), plus a bonus live disc from a 2001 show in Belfast.

Belle & Sebastian - "Like Dylan in the Movies" (BBC Session)
One more thing. Anyone know if the proper spelling is "Belle & Sebastian" or "Belle and Sebastian"? Their records use both the "&" and the "and," which just makes it all the more confusing.

As the resident Belle & Sebastian expert, a few quick points:
1) Belle & Sebastian is the correct spelling, as far as I know. I was confused that this record was labeled "Belle and Sebastian" when it came up in my iTunes, as it is the only record of theirs that does so.
2) "Seymour Stein"-- the song used in the High Fidelity clip above-- is one of their worst songs, and it even name drops Johnny Marr. The BBC sessions version is better, but still not good. If I were Jack Black, I would be pretty pissed off at having to listen to that song on a Monday morning, too, and I'm a HUGE fan.
3) This collection is awesome. Super awesome. The versions of "Lazy Line Painter Jane" and "Sleep the Clock Around" are worth price tag alone.
4) Record store employees get laid. Just sayin.
1. Okay.
2. Agreed, especially if you had a mixtape with Katrina & The Waves on it. Or is it Katrina AND The Waves?
3. Agreed.
4. LIAR!
