You might know Petra Haden as a former member of the Rentals, the Decemberists, and a generous recipient of some blessed genetics. You might know Miss Murgatroid as one Alicia J. Rose, the talented woman who wears the booking pants at Doug Fir, plus shoots photos of about a bazillion different bands.
But odds are, you don't know Hearts & Daggers, the lovely collaboration record between Haden and Rose.
Which makes sense, considering how the respective schedules of Miss Murgatroid & Petra Haden don't allow for touring, yet Hearts & Daggers is a record that begs to not be overlooked, or lost in the rapid shuffle of modern musical consumption.
Like stumbling down the rabbit hole with nothing but a violin and accordion, the record plays like a score to an ancient fairytale (or a long lost Tim Burton score), dragging the listener along all the while. Vocals are mostly sparse, as the record utilizes the open space of the material and leans heavy on the playful interaction between Rose's accordion and the strings of Haden. It's rare for music to be this visual, and definitely a recording that begs to be experienced.
