If you missed the Impossible Shapes last night at the Someday Lounge (as I did), the Bloomington, Indiana, group is playing again tonight at Produce Row Cafe (204 SE Oak), which has recently has changed ownership. I believe this is a free show, and Rob Walmart is also on hand.
Check out this very cool video for the Impossible Shapes' "Florida Silver Springs," featuring animation from none other than Chad VanGaalen, who is so insanely talented in so many ways that it isn't fair.
But what's even more exciting about tonight's show is that Spectacle Machine is playing, which is the new band from Martyn Leaper from the Minders. The Minders were part of the Elephant 6 collective; the band started in Denver, but Leaper and his wife moved to Portland some 10 years ago and have been kicking around the scene for awhile. If you don't miss the Minders, that probably means you never heard them. They were great, and here's finally a chance to check out what Leaper's been up to. I'd love to tell you more about it, but it seems Spectacle Machine is a brand new endeavor, no MySpace page, no other info. It'll be a mystery--and that's cool, daddy.
