Wildbirds & Peacedrums - "There is No Light"

Swedish husband and wife duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums are playing Portland tonight! Comprised of Andreas and Mariam Wallentin, W&P have two main weapons: percussion and vocals. Andreas bangs away on the drums, filling a ridiculous amount of space without the use of—for the most part—any other instrument. The result sounds somewhere between the tension heavy Gallowsbird's Park-era Fiery Furnaces and electronics free Animal Collective.

The real gem of this band, though, is Mariam's vocals. In the land of indie rock, singers who can actually sing tend to stand out like a sore thumb. And, needless to say, Miriam sticks out like a sore thumb. Her range is ridiculous, her voice going from something peaceful, mellow, and pretty to something that may have been birthed in the fires of hell, a guttural wail that is at equal points unholy and entrancing. Watching her work that thing in a live setting is going to be nothing less than amazing.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums play Doug Fir tonight with Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. 9pm. $10.
