Pond - Live at the X-Ray Cafe

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Get this: Turns out there was actually local music from Portland before you moved here from California—I know, crazy, right?—and this excellent live video from 1993 of Pond performing at the legendary X-Ray Cafe is proof of that. The famed venue, which now houses the less cool Liberation Street Church, is prominently featured in the video, with their "Xpresso" and customers who bring their own rodents (see the end of the video). Also keep an eye out for flannel, actual (non-ironic) crowd surfing, and the guys with long hair. Long hair! Oh, the '90s!

And they actually played guitars and hit real drums. Loud. All the while there was no web tubes.
The end.

Damn, I used to love Pond.

I remember I taped the video for "Agatha" from Bohemia Afterdark and we used to watch it over and over again, and I actually saw them live sometime 1994-ish along with Heatmiser, Quasi, Skiploader, and Gern Blanston.

Makes me think of Svelt - Chris and Greg Slusarenko's post Sprinkler project - awesome video goes here:

this was the best venue ever. never again will there exist another x-ray cafe... although, ironically, the smell in los angeles has a pretty similar vibe going on.

Ahh, the X-ray..you know, there's an absolutely terrific documentary about the X-Ray-Ben Ellis made it, it's called "X-Ray Visions", I found one on ebay. The X-Ray was truly a unique and marvelous monument to the ideals and non-ideals of Portland back in the day-I miss it. Tres and Ben, Helpful John, Elvis, Mistress Dawn, Ernest T, and the myriad others who made it what is was..thank you. Thank you so much.
