The Hush is Hushed by "The Man"

Sad news for the kiddies. It looks like the charming all-age space The Hush has been shut down. From a post on pc-pdx:

last night the inevitable happened, 5 cops, 1 olcc rep, and 2 fire marshals stopped the show and let us know that we were to have no more shows until we have a permit. Here's the reason we don't have one to begin with: due to the fact that the performance hall is three stories up we would be given a capacity of LESS THAN 49 INCLUDING PERFORMERS AND STAFF.

Will someone please think about the children?
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN?
Sorry, got carried away there. The venue is now looking for a new location:

all in all, I want to continue to work with the music community in making it the raddest it can be, there are so many amazing bands in portland right now and we have all been doing our part in supporting that. lets keep working together in harnessing that, whether it be attending a show, spreading the word about a band you really like and buying their albums, throwing sweaty house shows for new up and coming bands, or simply telling someone their art is awesome and worth appreciating, every little bit helps.

/Snip.

anyone know of any good warehouses for rent? HUSH the sequel maybe?

Bummer. We'll keep you updated if the venue finds a new home.

think of the children?

think of the advertising revenue that hush never needed to give out to any magazines, the cigarette money it never had to take, the destructive booze that it never had to sell to people or the chincy music industry promotional hoops it never had to jump through.

think of all the city money that was never spent, and the city actually having a organic artists community portland never had to spend a dime to have. 'creatives' that the city covets so eagerly. you want artists and live work spaces and a vibrant creative community, and then you send these fire marshals in to shut down the last interesting thing happening in old town portland.

think of the old town neighborhood, filled up with crappy suburban drunks, methadone clinics and homeless shelters that suddenly had a vibrant community center for the arts.

what old town clearly needs instead of a functioning and vibrant all ages artistic venue....is some coke head shit hole like the tube, dantes, dirty or whatever the fuck the dixie is.

good job fire marshal. you just made old town a tad bit crappier again. you denied repeated requests to come down and work with the people who ran the hush. you refused to ever answer what the capacity was of the place last year, when directly asked by me and then stepped on the coolest thing in old town.

have fun with that shit. the good music will never be in the bars in this town again. the bar scene in this town sucks ass.

peace the fuck out. stay the fuck out of my house fire marshal.

Old Town did have a vibrant all-ages artistic venue back in the 90's. First the X-Ray and then it reformulated as Thee O. Things were legit legally. The Fire Marshall would sometimes stop by when there were bigger shows, but their only concern was the # of people inside and worked with the space to keep things going. Sadly, rents in that part of town (and the rest of town) made it nearly economically impossible to run a fully-legit, all-ages, no alcohol space. Especially one that could its staff.

What we REALLY need is the city to give a non-profit, youthcentric organization a legit space and a budget to really get stuff going. Portland is running out of people with the dough to throw down into an all-ages space that will eventually get shut down either by outside forces, or lack of $$$.
