It's ON... The Great SXSW Taco Challenge

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 8:40 AM

tacos.jpgSo it begins...

This afternoon I leave for South by Southwest, a taco multimedia conference in Austin, Texas, that is renowned for its vast array of tacos bands the world over, showcasing their wares and looking to make a big splash in the hot sauce music scene. I'll be joined by Mercury freelancers Rob Simonsen and Cary Clarke, who will also be consuming as much taco deliciousness live music as they possibly can. A bunch of Portland musicians, of different degrees of prominence, are also packing up their taco trucks band vans for the trek down to Texas, so it will be good to see them perform on a soft, warm tortilla national stage. It's my first time at SXSW, and I'm really excited about leafy green cilantro seeing some bands for the first time and perhaps discovering a few. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing: Jack "Taco Jack!" Oblivian, Tacoelekinesis, Camera "Extra Guac" Obscura, Ida "Sudados" Maria, The Pico de Gallo Week that Was, and too many other bands to digest in one sitting.

Simonsen, Clarke, and I will be keeping careful track of all the bands we see tacos we eat and I shall do my best to report back diligently. Just so you know, there's going to be an unofficial competition to see who can eat the most, and since I know all End Hits readers are compulsive gamblers, let me give you a little tip. I shall CLEAN UP. I can easily polish off at least three tacos per meal, plus a couple extra for late night munchings, so that is roughly 11 tacos per day, and I shall be there for five days, so... Conservative estimate puts the numbers of tacos I will consume at 117. You heard it here first, folks.
