The annual Jackpot Records film festival celebrates year number six of offering free (yes, free!) music-based flicks for all to see. This year's festivities run from April 20th—24th, and, as always, will be at the Hollywood Theatre.
Wisely, the curators decided to not take my advice on which films to screen (my suggestions: Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park, Stryper's Greatest Hits: Live In Puerto Rico, From Justin to Kelly), and instead have loaded the festival with a bunch of "art, "culture," and even some thing called "hiphop." They just made that word up.
The lineup:
Monday, April 20th: DIRT ROAD TO PSYCHEDELIA, 7 pm—9 pm
Tuesday, April 21st: GRAFFITI ROCK & HIP HOP VIDEOS, 7 pm—9 pm
Wednesday, April 22nd: VINYL, 7 pm—9 pm
Thursday, April 23rd: AMERICA’S LOST BAND—THE REMAINS, 7 pm—9 pm
Friday, April 24th: TV CARNAGE PRESENTS…, 7 pm—9 pm
Full details on each film after the jump.
Monday, April 20th: DIRT ROAD TO PSYCHEDELIA, 7 pm—9 pm
(Q&A with filmmaker Scott Conn to follow)
Details the country/folk movement in Austin, Texas in the 1960s and its evolution into the psychedelic sounds of legends like 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo and Shiva’s Headband. The film takes an interesting twist by including interviews with an Austin policeman from the era determined to eradicate drugs from the scene. Dirt Road to Psychedelia is a love letter to a time period that seems quaint and innocent in retrospect. Psych lovers will find this story, with its wonderfully grainy Super-8 footage, to be a righteous treat.
Tuesday, April 21st: GRAFFITI ROCK & HIP HOP VIDEOS, 7 pm—9 pm
Graffiti Rock was a music television show in the tradition of American Bandstand and Soul Train. This pilot episode from 1984 features Run DMC, The New York City Breakers (fresh off their success in Beat Street), Kool Moe Dee, Special K of the Treacherous Three and (now well-know for his work in film and music) Vincent “Prince Vince” Gallo. To round out the program, some choice hip hop vids from yesteryear.
Wednesday, April 22nd: VINYL, 7 pm—9 pm
Vinyl seeks not to talk to people who collect vinyl records about music, but rather to discuss what drives a person to collect records in the first place. In addition to celebrities like Canadian actor/director Don McKellar and American Splendor creator Harvey Pekar, Alan Zweig speaks to a variety of record collectors including a car wash employee who claims to own over a million records and to have memorized the track listing of every K-Tel collection he owns, a government employee who refuses to organize his collection because he doesn’t want people to come over, and a man who threw out his large record collection rather than sell or give it away because he didn’t want anyone else to own it.
Thursday, April 23rd: AMERICA’S LOST BAND—THE REMAINS, 7 pm—9 pm
(Portland Premiere!)
America’s Lost Band captures the story of The Remains, the rock band that broke up on the brink of fame right after opening for The Beatles’ last-ever tour in 1966. While the film has loads of archival footage, the bulk of it centers on two days The Remains spent in Los Angeles, playing their first gigs after a forty year absence. Well-crafted concert footage is interspersed with a fly-on-the-wall vantage point of group interactions, intervening as little as possible to let the music and artists tell the story.
Friday, April 24th: TV CARNAGE PRESENTS…, 7 pm—9 pm
A festival exclusive created for this night only! Flanked by two VCRs, a young Pinky attempted to consolidate piles of VHS tapes that contained a universe of poorly executed, half-baked ideas into a grander vision. Over the years, TV Carnage has out-barfed itself, creating 5 volumes of hard to believe, masterfully edited interpretations of television’s smug best. This year, Pinky has specially programmed a volume of TV Carnage just for the festival! Additionally, Totally for Teens, the new Adult Swim show via the creator of TV Carnage, will be screened in its entirety.
