How can anyone not be draw to Superchunk's hook in "Learned To Surf," the opening song from their first release in seven years, Leaves in the Gutter?

"I stopped swimming and learned to surf"

LISTEN:

Superchunk - "Learned to Surf"

Is the song a tale of evolutionary expansion? Correcting ones mistakes and learning new tasks? A call to action to overcome diversity? Or maybe Mac just watched Point Break and was totally feeling the "100% pure adrenaline!" of Bodhi and Johnny Utah. Regardless, the song is a perfect reminder on why we all loved Superchunk in the first place, and after 20 years, they still harness that same nervous energy of their early years.

Totally unrelated to this post:
I once saw David Cross stagedive to "Slack Motherfucker" during a Superchunk performance for a Mr. Show afterparty of some sort. Yo La Tengo also performed. To this day, I'm still not sure how I was allowed in to the party.

There are whispers that the band will playing Portland later this year. If that happens, we'll let you know so you can scream along to "Driveway to Driveway" with us.
