The Fall's Mark E. Smith is the subject of the latest "This Much I Know," a weekly questionnaire in the Observer. In the piece, the post-punk legend behind such literate-rock classics as "The Classical" and "Kicker Conspiracy" recalls his first memory: reading "Muffin the Mule" when he was 3-years old. That got this Yank wondering—what is Muffin the Mule, exactly? A little-remembered Nabokov novel? A Kafka short story?

A quick google exposes the shocking truth. Muffin the Mule is, according to its Wikipedia page, "a puppet character in British television programmes for children."

What the hell?
