Scotland Barr, Maker of Music and Hot Sauce, Dies

We just received the sad news that Scott Moritz, known in Portland music circles as Scotland Barr, has passed away after a battle with cancer. His band, Scotland Barr and the Slow Drags, made rootsy Americana rock that encompassed a wide stylistic range, highlighted by Barr's empathetic and unpretentiously soulful vocals.

Portlanders also will know Barr as the creator of the ubiquitous Secret Aardvark Hot Sauce, which graces tables at eateries all over town. I've got a bottle in my kitchen cupboard right now. Our thoughts are with Moritz's friends and families during this sad time. Thanks, Scotland, for the music and the heat. You will be missed.

Yep, knew the guy well, had fun, had memories, seemed like he had many more miles on him, too bad death got him so soon, sadly it may get us too, so live life greater in memory of those who have left it sooner than later.

Quite a loss. I never got to enjoy his band, but damn, I love some Secret Aardvark on just about everything! Possibly, the only real Portland flavor. R.I.P.

So sad. He wrote some great songs.

Much love to Scott's wife, family, bandmates, and friends. In my opinion, he was one of Portland's best lyricists and will be missed immensely. I'm pretty sure the last band t-shirts The Slow Drags printed up said something like "Rock and Roll Gave Me Cancer." That dark wit was most certainly in his music, but it seemed like he definitely brought that full frontal approach to his living, too. The title for his upcoming double LP is "We Will Be Forgotten." Eventually, maybe, but not for a long, long, long time.

Scotland was one of Portlands most talented musicians, and the man with the dry sense of humor and the biggest heart. His music will live on in all of us-NEVER to be forgotten. We appreciated all the facets of him, and wish strength to Stacy and all his loved ones.
