Church Change Their Name to... Ape Cave?

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Sun, Dec 20, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Ape! Cave!
  • Ape! Cave!

Rumor has it that the excellent indie act Church has pulled a Starfucker—or a Pyramidddddd—and are now called Ape Cave. Their first show under this new moniker will be January 9th at Slabtown. We dropped a line into the band's cave and will let you know their response.

*** 12/20 Update ***
It's The Church's fault!
According to Cristof Hendrickson of the-band-formerly-known-as-Church, Australia's The Church contacted them and requested they "stop playing under our name." He adds, "They were friendly about it, but made it clear that continuing on with Church was no longer an option." Hendrickson also sheds some light on their new name: "Ape Cave is a cave in Washington near Mt Rainer, and it was discovered by the boy scout troop the Apes many years ago." So there you go.

Ape Shape broke up a few years ago when Ralf Youtz moved to California (I think it was California).

Wondered how Church was going to keep that name, I do love "Under the Milkey Way" by The Church.

Also- Ralf moved to the Bay Area, RIP Ape Shape- one of the best/funnest PDX bands in recent memory.

Finally, there is a band in Portland called Gay Cave!!

Well that's silly. Death From Above added "1979" differentiating themselves from Death From Above. I would image "The " would be enough in trademark claim.

The Ape Cave (which is a very long continuous lava tube) was not discovered by the boy scout troop. It was discovered by a logger named Lawrence Johnson in 1947 when his truck fell into a sinkhole and in there he came upon the entrance. The boy scout troop came along three years later and were in fact the first to explore it.
