Sad News: Vic Chesnutt Attempts Suicide, In Coma

Posted by Andrew R Tonry on Thu, Dec 24, 2009 at 6:21 PM

Everything seemed to be going great and then WHAM! The unwanted crack of bad news. Vic Chesnutt is in a coma after attempting suicide. From the New York Times:

Vic Chesnutt, a singer-songwriter from Athens, Ga., beloved by fans and critics for his disarmingly open songs about mortality and pain, is in a coma, his family has confirmed. They did not say what caused the coma.

News about Mr. Chesnutt’s condition spread through the Internet on Wednesday through posts on Twitter by the singer Kristin Hersh, who has played with him.

Vic's friends, via Twitter, say the coma is the result of attempted suicide: (H/T Brooklyn Vegan)

"yeah, i can tell you what i know, but no one knows much: another suicide attempt, looks bad, coma—if he survives, there may be brain damage"

I interviewed Chesnutt last month and was somewhat surprised he was so bright and up beat on the phone. Shit, he was almost gregarious. He seemed incredibly happy about the creative renaissance he was in the midst of.

Chesnutt's recent show at Mississippi Studios was one of the most stunning I've seen in the last year. It was so striking, passionate, beautiful and close. A number of times it flat out gave me the chills. Chesnutt was profoundly tuned up, on seemingly more than just booze.

My thoughts are with you, Vic. I wish you the best in whatever you choose.
