Gil Scott-Heron - "Me And The Devil"

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 2:17 PM

I feel embarrassed about how little I know about Gil Scott-Heron—I know the name and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," nothing else—but I am happy to say that this clip for "Me And The Devil" makes me want to devour everything the man has ever done. It's a stunning video of big city life filtered through horror movie visuals—urban decay, the skeleton skateboard gang (Bones Brigade?)—that are delicately assembled together. I know this blog is like 90% YouTube videos (the other 10% is nothing but Juggalo jokes), but if you watch any of them, start here.

This is the lead single from I'm New Here, which is due out February 9th on XL Recordings.

"I know this blog is like 90% YouTube videos (the other 10% is nothing but Juggalo jokes)" You know, sometimes I wish it were a bit more, but I appreciate the honesty (and I'll admit, the Juggalo jokes).

A great place to dig a little deeper with Gil-Scott Heron is in the book "A Change is Gonna Come" by a former prof of mine, Craig Werner. It places the black music of the 70s against the cultural infuences and tensions at the time. Really great read. Just make sure you got clips of some of the songs referenced, as reading it without hearing it doesn't fully convey the message.
