The Killas In Manila

The Philippines aren't exactly a Mecca for touring bands. Geographically it's a convenient stop for bands traveling from, say, Japan to Austalia, but local promoters seldom can afford big name bands to make the stop there. Even if the funds are available, it's still a huge gamble on the promoters part if their intended audience can even afford to meet ticket sale standards. With over a third of the country below the poverty line, putting food on the table is far more important for Filipinos than witnessing the Black Eyed Peas mangle "Wipe Out" (though this video doesn't help my point).

However, what Filipinos lack in concert funding, they certainly make up for in cute-as-a-button articles like this one from the Manila Standard Today about the Killers January 31st show in Manila.

Now if you told me that The Killers will be playing in Manila, I would’ve eaten you like a dog. One of the world’s top rock bands is coming to this maladroit country run by thugs and imbeciles? A miracle by any standard what with the usual, bland fare of pop and RnB acts. This is an event worth buoying up. Now the people behind the gig are not paying me to blare the trumpets and champion their moneymaking affair [they can give me tickets though!]. So why am I “endorsing” it? Evidently, I like the band and will support any endeavor that can potentially pave the way for more factory-disapproved, non-manufactured artists to visit. Think about it. If The Killers concert sells-out (and it is possible with their universal appeal), we just might be fortunate enough to take pleasure in live tunes from the Kings Of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and perhaps even U2.

For once in your life do the right thing, Bono! Bring your factory-disapproved band to Manila, you grinch! To read the entire article click here. Otherwise, I might eat you like a dog.
