Farewell, Cary Clarke

Sad days here at the Mercury music corral. Our dear local music columnist—he of Our Town Could Be Your Life fame—Cary Clarke is leaving this paper for ever and ever and ever.

Clarke is departing the slums of print journalism for the bright lights of City Hall, taking a position as the City of Portland Arts & Culture Policy Coordinator. One of the original founding voices of PDX Pop Now!, a tireless champion of all-age music reform, and a vocal fan of Sublime (seriously), Clarke will be a great resource for the city of Portland.

Congrats, Cary.

P.S. Now that you are in City Hall, I expect all my parking tickets to magically disappear. Remember, I have some embarrassing photos of you.

Forever ever? Forever ever?!
Simultaneously selfishly bummed/yet glad he got the new position. Can't think of anyone who is more perfectly suited for that job.
I also have felt the wrath of Cary's Sublime love. I once called someone's music "sublime, but not in the bad long beach way", on twitter. Cary called me out on it.
I then admitted that, perhaps living with Louie Dog IS the only way to stay sane.
Needless to say, the lovin' came back to me.

As is obvious to anyone who loves music enough to read about it in the local alt-weekly, getting to write about hometown music and the people and ideas behind it is a privilege, and I am tremendously grateful for the three years I've had at at the Our Town Could Be Your Life desk. I'll definitely miss that beat, but I couldn't possibly be more excited to get down to business in my new position. And, of course, thank you all for your support - I'll do everything I can to justify it! See you at the concerts, and plays, and readings, and openings and talks and...well, yeah, see you around.

I took that photo, therefore I have tons more embarrassing photos that nobody's seen yet, so I expect some really big favors from City Hall in the future. Seriously though, congrats Cary! Glad to have you back in town doing a job tailor made for you.
