Meet Joanna Newsom

Really great profile on Joanna Newsom in the NY Times Magazine. Jody Rose follows Newsom to her hometown, Nevada City, a small hippy holdout in northern California. I can just see it. The piece is a boon for fans, plus folks who don't really know what to do with the squeaky voiced harpist. At one point Newsom talks about going on a three day vision quest in high school in hopes of transforming from child to adult, and to find her spirit animal. No shit. Oh, and San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom is a distant relative.

Aside from the funky stuff, however, the story is quite illuminating. (But then again, searching for photos for this blog post I came across one with Newsom and Andy Samberg which said they are (or were) dating, and now I'm more confused than ever—Andy Samberg is a fucking idiot.)

Plus there's a dig on Devendra Banhart, which I can ALWAYS get down with:

Says Newsom: “When people would put me and Devendra Banhart in the same sentence, they were coding his eccentricities as world-weary and ‘witchy’ and coding my eccentricities as childlike and naïve. I felt like it minimized my intelligence..."

Yeah, it's a good profile.

But all those tidbits you mentioned were also included in the profile on her in Arthur, after Ys came out: http://www.arthurmag.com/2006/12/23/nearer…
