Stare at The Package Tonight

Posted by Mark Lore on Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 2:25 PM

In Portland we're lucky enough to have Dirtnap Records, which kicks out loads of punk rock jams with plenty of energy and sneer. Chico, California... not so lucky, though I must say the town does kick out loads of dollar pint and 75 cent kamikaze specials for the drunken college stoodents.

Chico's Severance Package is an anomaly in their hometown, a shimmering oasis of rawk in a place that lives on crust-punk and jam bands. The trio includes Robin and Josh Indar, who spent their formative years in East Bay punk band Black Fork (which released an LP called Rock For Loot on Lookout Records in 1995). The Package is rounded out by drummer Steve Bragg, who's played with everyone, including late-'80s, early-'90s indie rock lovelies Vomit Launch (which included included Tape Op's Larry Crane on bass and Lindsey Thrasher of Exiled Records fame on guitar).

Severance Package recently released its All Down Hill 7-inch on Portland's Shut Up Records, a tight and speedy trio of songs that conjures up everything form the Aussie punk of the Saints to the sleazy glam of Sweet. Mmm... makes my mouth water just typing that.

The band will kick out the jams tonight at Plan B with Defect Defect, Boo Frog and The Amalgams. 8 p.m. Sorry, it's 21 and over... and I don't think the band brought Chico drink specials with them.
