Win Tickets to Pavement in Portland (Day #3)

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 1:56 PM

pavement_wizard.jpeg

Welcome to our third day of Pavement ticket giveaways. In previous days we've already asked you to make your case for tickets, and talk about your favorite album, so what else is left? Favorite member? (No, everyone knows that's Mark Ibold.) What does Stephen Malkmus smell like? (Cinnamon with a slight dash of cardamom, duh.)

Since we are so creatively bankrupt, we are opening this contest up to you.

Comment below and tell us what sort of contest we should have for tomorrow's giveaway. The best suggestion will win themselves a pair of tickets. Remember, the contest should be relatively easy and not solved by a simple Google search. Make your suggestions below and the best one by tomorrow at 9am win two tickets. Good luck.

How about a tattoo that has something to do with a Pavement song?

Example: "Gardenia". I happen to have a Gardenia tattoo. It's a coincidence, but I still love Pavement.

Draw your favorite member of Pavement using only MS Paint. (Mac users can download "Paintbrush", a near equivalent. Google it!)

Since the tickets should go to a Pavement fan, I would think there's a good chance this person would have seen Pavement in concert before. Perhaps the next contest could be sharing their Pavement concert experience. There's always a story to be told when someone attends a concert. The best Pavement concert story wins tickets.

Fuck it. I don't even care.

Contest: Who can attempt to win tickets but then feel bad when they win because they never wanted them in the first place and some poor indie-emo kid how has to shell out $$$ to go?

Photoshop / MS Paint contest - put Stephen Malkmus in any compromising situation you'd like (i.e. The Mercury gives us a scenario: Stephen Malkmus kissing Bea Arthur while Drinking Stumptown Coffee on a Crocodile Mile Slip 'n Slide all while balancing a taco on his head). Best photoshop/drawing wins.

Tomorrow's tickets should go to the Best Sob Story about how when Pavement was around and playing live shows, you were still in your training bra and Smashing Pumpkins was about as indie as it got for you. Then you waded through Weezer and Modest Mouse to discover the O.G. indie bands such as Pavement and Sunny Day Real Estate and the Pixies, and you spent a lot of time lamenting that you weren't even old enough to go to the shows even if you KNEW about those bands. Then the Pixies got back together and that was rad, and then Sunny Day Real Estate said "We're getting back together! Oh wait, no we're not. Just kidding," and that was sad. So Pavement is really your final chance. I bet those are some good stories.

I think you guys should fashion a "would You Rather" type contest. My friends and I always play on road trips. For example would you rather get jerked off with sand paper or walk around with Siracha in your butt all day. Just really dumb and funny shit. You could make it Pavement oriented like would you rather eat peanut butter out Mark Ibold's butt after a two hour set or whisper sweet nothings and brush Steve Malkmus's pubic hair after the show. I don't know i am fucking cracking up about it right now!!!!!

Who can assemble the best Pavement look-a-like group and be at the merc office for judging at whatever time determined.

Who can provide the best, most obscure (but true with proof) fun-fact?

Who can make the most interesting mash up featuring Pavement and other band of choice.

I was going to post and try to win tickets, but I don't want to ruin my chances of getting to play Pavement themed would you rather all day tomorrow. So I'll just be clever on another day and hopefully win, since I can't think of anything that beats that, the paint thing or the parody song one. I like the guys idea about doing the game and then the paint contest the next day... those would be some awesome paint drawings!

When I first began following Pavement, I'd read about Malkmus and Courtney Love taking turns with the NY Times crossword (Malkmus' way with words is legendary...won't speculate here about Ms. Love's rep). Heard SM is still into the puzzles.

Create a Pavement related crossword. Winner submits a the best one. Next day's winner first to complete it. 'Nuff said.

The best idea is thus:

Submit a photograph of your favorite stretch or square of *real* pavement (as in, cement walkway) in Portland, OR, and explain in a clever caption why you chose it - are there initials of special interest in the pavement? Graffiti? Spilled paint in a rorschach shape that reminds you of....??? Does the shape of a particular crack or cranny remind you of something? (Perhaps another "crack" of personal interest, wink wink?) Best photo/story wins!!

I love all of these MS Paint suggestions! Anyway, how about this: we're obviously all really excited here about seeing Pavement here, which means that we will all almost certainly purchase tickets if we do not win this contest. SO: if you win tickets, what will you spend that money on that you would have otherwise spent on Pavement tickets?

The contest winner should be whoever can provide the best phographic proof of someone under 25 listening to Pavement, extra points for vinyl. Or whoever sets up the best swap program like Toys for Guns, except swap Pavement albums for shite like Justin Bieber, Ke$ha or any American Idol produced record.

Ezra, I think you're my age, so I'll be you bought "No Alternative." Everybody did, right? Anyway, remember in "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence," when SM is listing the R.E.M. songs, and then he's like, "TIME AFTER TIME! MY LEAST FAVORITE SONG! TIME AFTER TIME IS MY LEAST FAVORITE SONG!"

How about: What's your least favorite Pavement song, and why?
