Blitzen Trapper at the Woods, May 5, 2010

The not-so-secret Blitzen Trapper show at the Woods last night turned out to be more a party than a concert, with everyone in high spirits—some perhaps even in a tequila reverie from Cinco de Mayo (not naming names). Along with friends of the band, a tiny group of fans were lucky enough to get passes from Music Millennium, but the list was kept to a reasonable number and as a result the Woods never felt like it was too crowded. It was Blitzen Trapper's 10th anniversary (!) and they rolled through a convivial set of mostly new numbers from the upcoming Destroyer of the Void (due out June 8), along with some older favorites like "God + Suicide" and the already-classic "Furr." Other highlights included "The Tree" with guest vocals from Alela Diane (who also did a handful of her own songs before the Blitzen Trapper's set) and the second half of "Destroyer of the Void," which saw BT at their zaniest '70s stoner-rock best.

Along with Diane, a handful of friends played brief opening sets, including Diane's frequent co-vocalist Alina Hardin, country cover band Denver (whose ranks included BT frontman Eric Earley), John Totten of the Quiet Ones (who did a mean Michael McDonald impression), and solo sets from BT's Marty Marquis and Brian Koch. After the show, the Woods devolved into a '60s dance party DJ'ed by Scott Magee. It was among the most fun nights of spring so far, and points to another good year for Blitzen Trapper—Destroyer of the Void takes them further down the classic rock road they hinted at with Furr without too many new surprises, but Earley's songwriting is as good (and willfully weird) as ever, ripe with iconic imagery and lightning-fast chord changes. For those who were lucky enough to go to the show, it won't be a night forgotten quickly.

This was a fun show! I wish I could have stayed later, alas, work.
