Tonight! Southerly @ Doug Fir

As I wrote in this week's print edition, Southerly's latest EP, Champion of the Noisy Negavitivsts is an instrumental five song EP dedicated to Krist Krueger's departed friend, Jeff Hanson.

I asked Krueger if he would perform the lyric-less EP in its entirety at tonight's Doug Fir release event. The answer is no—Krueger and co. will perform the songs, but intermittently through the set. It's important, he said, that the set have some kind of dynamic and narrative structure.

And while tracks from the new EP are certainly moving and effective pieces, I think it's also important to share some of the work more often found in Southerly's wheelhouse. The most recent full-length, Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist is terrific through and through. The songs are predominantly catchy, well-crafted and memorable, so much so I had a hard time deciding which to play. I'm going with "A Course Design," as it was the first hook from the record to get lodged in my brain. Enjoy:
