Your Guide to the Mercury Anniversary Party: Astronautalis Edition

It's no secret that I have spilled plenty of ink about Astronautalis over the years, but ever since witnessing the man at work, I've been hooked. This means seeing him amongst the tumbleweeds at such notable venues as Conan's and that one terrible bar on Hawthorne that resembled a strip bar without any nudity (Viper Room?). Over the years this Texas/Florida/Seattle emcee has built an impressive fanbase, primarily based on his intense live shows.

In addition to performing from his catalog of recordings, Astronautalis is a noted battle rapper. A former Scribble Jam participant, his shows always culminate with a live freestyle (or two) where he takes various suggestions from the crowd and goes from there. Previous to being asked to tour Australia with Tegan and Sara (weird, right?), he released this freestyle based on the following topics provided to him by the sisters:

the Olympics / smoke detectors / backrubs / hot tubs / talking about the existence of a president of Canada while doing press with an American college student

The result?

Astronautalis - "Voice Mail Freestyle: Tegan & Sara"

Here is something from his non-freestyled catalog:

Astronautalis - "Trouble Hunters"

The Mercury anniversary party is Sat June 5 at Rotture. All-age outdoor events from 7-10 pm with sets from DJ Copy, DJ Linoleum, and DJ Dundiggy. At 10 pm we move inside for a free, 21-plus, show with Mean Jeans, Astronautalis, Explode into Colors (their final performance), and guest host Fogatron. See you there.

It was the Viper Room.

If my memory serves me correct (which is probably doesn't), at one point he started freestyling over "The Whisper Song" beat with the hook "wait'll you see my dick, you're going to be disappointed as shit."
