Let's Talk About... Festival Season Keeps Rolling On

Pickathon is officially over, and was totally, totally great... even if I still haven't returned to feeling quite right two days later. The Bonnie 'Prince' Billy set in the forest was about as amazing as you could have hoped for—and this comes from someone who isn't a particularly big Will Oldham fan. Other highlights: Roadside Graves, Breathe Owl Breathe, Langhorne Slim, and a Black Prairie + Blue Giant mecha-supergroup whose set was graced by a visit to the front of the stage by the proprietress of Pendarvis Farm—on horseback.

But that doesn't mean it's the end of festival season. For those in town, SMMR BMMR takes place this weekend at Plan B featuring a huge variety of punk and garage bands. (More on that in this week's paper.) And this Saturday at McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove is the Americana Music Festival, a daylong music fest featuring Loch Lomond, Sallie Ford, Ha Ha Tonka, the Alialujah Choir, Town Mountain, and more. There's overnight camping available (for a fee), but the music is totally free. Info here.

And for those who already have tickets, the sold-out Doe Bay Festival takes place on Orcas Island in Puget Sound, with music by Fruit Bats, Drew Grow, Portland Cello Project, and more. But that's still not the end of festival season: Aug 19-22 sees the Portland Folk Festival here in the city, and then of course there's the music acts that perform at T:BA, and some other big music fest thing in September.
