Sharon Van Etten played a phenomenal set at the Doug Fir this past Friday, opening for Jose Gonzalez's band Junip. With a handful of songs played solo, and some more with her backing band, it was clear that Van Etten—playing her first Portland show—is already a force to be reckoned with. The singer/songwriter/guitarist ran through nearly all of the songs on her recently released Epic album, which is a surefire contender to be one of the year's best. Meanwhile, Junip also played a fine set, packed with low-key, pulsating songs. The talented Rachel Bowman was on hand to take some excellent photos of this show—check 'em out!
