Is there any Christmas song as sweet and salty as "Fairytale in New York" by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl? When I briefly lived in Ireland I was delighted to find that "Fairytale" was treated with the kind of reverence usually reserved for hymns. It's classic status and memorability are undoubtedly thanks to the song's most infamous couplet: "You're a bum, you're a punk. You're an old slut on junk. / Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed / You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap, lousy faggot / Happy Christmas your arse, I pray god it's our last."
