Video Danish Band Efterklang and Vincent Moon Present An Island

Music documentary director Vincent Moon made a splash on the internet Monday for some harsh words against Arcade Fire (he's worked with 'em, says they're "not good people"), but the film he was promoting for that interview is well worth examining away from the controversy. Above is one of three trailers for An Island, a collaboration between Moon and Danish band Efterklang, who count erstwhile Portlanders (and insanely gifted musicians) Peter and Heather Broderick among their ranks. An Island was filmed on a relatively isolated small island off the coast of Denmark, and the band was filmed performing over the course of four days for unique, one-of-a-kind performances that look—from the clip above, at least—like they're pretty emotionally potent.
An Island is premiering in an unusual way: in a series of "private-public" screenings taking place around the world, for which anyone can sign up and host. There are currently two scheduled in Portland: one at the Radio Room (1101 NE Alberta) on February 20 at 9 pm, and one at some person's apartment on February 13. (That second screening is a potluck, and "phood" is requested. I think we all know what that means.)

An Island is an unconventional music performance film and an abstract documentary about a band and an island.In August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang's 8 piece-live band met up on an island off the Danish coast. The objective was to shoot a film that was the same length as an album, and full of performances, experiments and collaborations.
Over an intense period of four days Efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their album Magic Chairs (4AD, 2010). It was documented by Vincent Moon who also conducted several filmic and musical experiments with Efterklang as his dedicated playmates.
