Akron/Family's Video for "Island" Sure Is Pretty

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Wed, Mar 23, 2011 at 4:29 PM

Here's the video for Akron/Family's "Island," a slow-paced, dreamy ballad that builds to a steady crescendo. The video is appropriately beautiful, matching the song's lyrics with some truly stunning photography. There are quite a few impressive aerial shots, too, which are not exactly easy to get—it's nice to see bands like Akron/Family issuing films of such high production quality.

Akron/Family plays this Saturday at the Wonder Ballroom along with a heap of other local bands. Fittingly, there's an article on the band in the upcoming issue of the Mercury (and a slightly longer version of the story will appear here on this website in a couple short hours). While talking to Akron/Family drummer Dana Janssen in preparation for the article, he told me he definitely has an affinity for islands, as does the band: Their latest, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, was conceived on a volcano on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, and they may even at some point take that isolation a step further with future projects:

"I definitely love the idea of being on an island with nothing else but maybe a computer and the three of us just vibing out. We have all talked about the idea of going to an island and unplugging from everything except for a recording utensil. I find that that’s when we’re us and we’re able to be us—and not worry about it. You know what I mean? Not that I necessarily do worry about that, by any means, but it’s something you think about for sure, like, 'How is this going to be received?' And I don’t want to have that to be the mode I’m creating in."
