When I interviewed Sharon Van Etten late last year, she spoke enthusiastically about a project she had taken on with Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), Megafaun and Fight the Big Bull. Altogether, the group intended to render the ghostly recordings funneled through Alan Lomax's gramophone from the vast Sounds of the South collection, taped all throughout the deep Southeast in 1961. Van Etten and Co.'s interpretations were first performed at an old church in Durham, NC back in September of 2010, and I was told there would be a live recording surfacing sometime this year (!!!).

But until then, here is an excellent performance of "Tribulations," from last weekend's MusicNow festival in Cincinnati, wherein Vernon and Van Etten absolutely kill it.
