It's been a year since local band The Whines released Hell to Play, an arrestingly sincere collection of scraped-together recordings navigating the space between grungy garage-psych and battered country ballads (imagine Moe Tucker fronting the Cheater Slicks or Dead Moon). Well, the band is back at it with an equally discerning 7-inch on the first-rate Mt. St. Mtn. Records. Check the B-side, in which the band cogently reworks Hell to Play highlight "Straybird" by laying down a sloshy shuffle, trading acoustic guitars for electrics, and topping everything off with a harmonica solo.
