GILLIAN WELCH
(Roseland, 8 NW 6th) Where you been, Gillian? The divine Ms. Welch came to Portland last year as part of the wonderful hootenanny that was the Dave Rawlings Machine show, but otherwise it's been ages since folk traditionalist Gillian Welch came through under her own name. She's back, with musical other half Rawlings in tow, supporting their haunting new record The Harrow and the Harvest. NED LANNAMANN Also see our article on Gillian Welch.
THE MINDERS, NIGHTMOVES, KAREN
(Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi) At long last, it really does seem as if the Minders are back. Once an arm of the famed Elephant 6 Collective, the relocated Minders became a Portland band some years ago, but their vintage candy-colored psych has been conspicuously absent following the 2006 album It's a Bright Guilty World and its ensuing tour. Frontman Martyn Leaper has never entirely abandoned the group; a few-odd low-profile shows at various Portland bars indicated that the Minders had some life left in them, and here's the proof. "Needle Doll," a slice of charmingly frayed garage pop that appears on this year's PDX Pop Now compilation, is the first new Minders track in years, and they're not only playing the PDX Pop festival at the end of this month, tonight they headline their first Portland club date in years.
