Hey Spuds, the one and only Devo will be making their glorious return to Portland tomorrow (Friday, September 16) at the Crystal Ballroom. Great news, right? Even better, we have a pair of tickets burning a hole in our protective yellow suit. Want them? Ha, what a silly question, of course you do.

Just comment below before Friday (that's tomorrow) at 9am and tell us all about your favorite Devo song. The best post will win the tickets. Good luck, and God bless Devo now and forever.

My favorite Devo song is the theme to Dr. Detroit. Mostly because when it pops up on shuffle it instantly transports me to my basement in the mid 80's and reinforces the strong upbringing that expanded cable gave me. Disney woke me up, Hbo watched me after school, and Cinemax taught me all the rest. Showtime was a dirtbag uncle that lived in a smelly trailer.

Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA - One of the most energetic songs. The driving beat, then the crazy synth sounds. It's at the same time manic and loose but the arrangement is very precise. Features vocal interplay between multiple members, tempo and key changes throughout. The lyrics are very devo. Spuds. Battles. De-volution. Isolation. Sacrifice. Society. Poles in holes. Also it has a rad solo at the end. Their most perfect song. One of the earliest songs where they really started becoming devo. If you watch old clips on youtube, some as early as '78 you can actually see the band become itself.

The live version of Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA is brilliant! (and I'd love to hear it, hint, hint)

Snowball. One of the greatest, and most poignant, love songs ever about addiction and loss.

My favorite is 'Gut Feeling'. It's a perfect title for the song because the beginning crescendo builds up into a sound that musically describes what it feels like when you have butterflies in your stomach. You get the butterflies when you're in love but you also get them when you're anxious or something has built up that you need to let out (I call it 'the moths' in that case). When it gets to the end and turns into 'Slap Your Mammy', it's like a punch in the face celebration of "Eat shit! I'm over it!"

I even have special Section 8 Devo - In-Ear Buds optimized to listen to Freedom of Choice (for those who like the accessible songs) . But really I listen to Be Stiff, I Need A Chick, 34C, and the other old Hardcore Devo.

Sadly it's Whip It. But only because I got laid for the first time to that song. What can I say... brings back memories.

Whip It on whippets provided a cheap psychedelic garage time for a 6th grade Texan girl ca. 1993. Thanks Devo, and for all your more interesting songs that experience led me to enjoy, with happily rerouted neurons. It was worth it.

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". A cover is measured by how well it brings new emotional energy to the original. Devo took The Stones' horniness, distorted and amplified it, and then pulled back the comforter to reveal some really wet and stained sheets. It's unclear how many people were in the bed.

It is one of the best covers in the history of rock and roll.

Through Being Cool is my favorite Devo song. When I'm feeling walked on or pushed around by somebody, the man, or life in general, I like to blast it in the car and imagine Mark Mothersbaugh and I teaming up to rearrange some faces in some sweet vinyl outfits. Makes me feel better. ;)

Jocko Homo is my favorite. It sums up the manifesto of de-evolution quite nicely. The video is also pretty twisted.

Sac County Jail used to blast music over the PA during the hour-long basketball games inmates got to play in for good behavior. "Gates of Steele" came on and I really dug the song, seemed real appropriate for my situation (I was in for embezzling money form a shoe store). I was pretty bummed when everyone else yelled for the guards to 'turn off that queer shit."

I got out a few days later and have been a fan of the song and band ever since.

. 'gates of steel' sums up what DEVO is all about. ominous, dystopian, and full of pop hooks.

As a young kid in '80 my mom allowed my brother and I to each choose a 7" single while shopping at Target. He picked Cool and the Gang's 'Celebration' and I was drawn to Devo's 'Whip-It'. I got home and spun that record on my brown Fisher-Price turntable and was blown away, thus sending me down a deviant course of music appreciation. Perhaps not my favorite Devo song it is however notable as a turning point in the development of my musical tastes. That honor may go to 'Beautiful World', and it would be if I won. Fingers crossed I have a gut feeling...

My favorite is Devo's cover of "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." It feels like they ground up the song, rebuilt, and channeled it through an animatronic pizza parlor band with little robots that can't get any.

My favorite Devo song is "Gates of Steel" because it's the first song by the band that I heard that wasn't one I discovered by watching MTV or listening to the radio but by actually going out and buying a Devo album. It was then that I discovered that Devo was much more than just the "Whip It" guys but were in fact a band both subversive and substantial. Though Devo's sound was definitely an acquired taste when they first started, I can see now that they were indeed a band that was ahead of its time. Though their names may not come up too often on a list of musical influences, many of today's bands are playing material that sounds an awful lot like what Devo were doing 30+ years ago. In years to come, we're going to see more bands come out and confess that they were more inspired by Devo than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin and that's well worth celebrating.

"Working in a Coal Mine," because of the bizarre juxtaposition of crazy synth and old Americana, and the pretense that these skinny guys could even carry a pick-axe. So beyond ridiculous it's brilliant.
