Located in the heart of Milan, Italy, the historic Teatro Smeraldo was a cinema house before converting to performance venue some decades ago. Here it acts as the richly textured backdrop for which Portland songwriter Alela Diane, situated among the empty audience chairs, debuts the previously unreleased "Rose & Thorn." And though Diane's family band, Wild Divine, usually backs her up, this time she's going solo as part of the Milano Acoustics series. All told, it's a stunning track, and Diane's voice resonates warmly in the lush setting, filling the empty house with her soulful tones and demonstrating her power as a songwriter. It's well worth a watch.
