Alexis Gideon Prepares Video Musics III: Floating Oceans

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Tue, Mar 6, 2012 at 2:59 PM

Alexis Gideon is one of Portland's greatest talents—a singular visionary creating multimedia opuses that have no peer. I've said as much before, and I'll say it again: Gideon's stuff is amazing.

Which is why I'm so excited by this trailer for Gideon's latest work. It's the third installment in his Video Musics series, following up 2010's Video Musics II: Sun-Wu Kong. That was a fully realized opera/animated film that was based on an ancient Chinese epic. This one, Video Musics III: Floating Oceans, is "based on the works of the early 20th century Irish writer Lord Dunsany and inspired by the time and dream experiments of the Irish physicist John William Dunne." You had me at dream experiments. Gideon composed and performed all the music for the 38-minute film, and judging by his past work, the music's enough to stand on its own.

Look, his shit's kind of hard to explain, so just watch the trailer (it's gorgeous) and see if it doesn't pique your interest. This is Gideon's first foray into stop-motion animation, which he undertook with Cynthia Star, and he'll be taking the piece on the road and performing a live score for it later this year. Video Musics III: Floating Oceans sees its premiere on October 11 at the Hollywood Theatre, which feels like a very long time to wait. Oh well. Gideon's currently doing a residency in France, but he'll be back Stateside in June; he's also been working with the Golden Bears' Julianna Bright on a new band called Sleepheart (check out some tracks here).
