The Shins Cover the Magnetic Fields

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Fri, Jul 27, 2012 at 8:06 AM

This has been making the internet rounds this morning, so we're gonna jump on the bandwagon and post it, too! It's a stripped-down version of the Shins (James Mercer, Richard Swift, and Joe Plummer) covering the Magnetic Fields' "Andrew in Drag" for Australia's Triple J and their Like a Version series of covers. This is a tender, acoustic take on the Magnetic Fields song, which has echoes of "Lola" in the lovelorn tale of one man falling in love... with his fellow man... in drag. Dig how songwriter Stephin Merritt tastefully rhymes "drag" with "shag" in the final verse.

If this isn't enough Shins for you, they just premiered a live take of "It's Only Life" recorded and filmed at James Mercer's house, continuing their series of performances taken from their rehearsal space. You can watch that over at the Lollapalooza site.

The Shins perform at the Keller Auditorium on Wednesday, September 26.
