Tonight in Music: Yeasayer, Superfest, Techne Rendered Dawn & More

Posted by Lex Chase on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 1:34 PM

YEASAYER, DAUGHN GIBSON
(Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside) Brooklyn noisemakers Yeasayer's new album Fragrant World has gotten mixed reviews, and now it is time for Portland to pass judgment. The raucous gloabl-boogie band makes beats and hips shake. Do they still got it? Go see! ZIBBY PILOTTE

SUPERFEST: MAGIC MOUTH, DJ BEYONDADOUBT, MASSACOORAMAAN, WHITE RAINBOW, THE MIRACLES CLUB
(Backspace, 115 NW 5th) Portland's premier annual all-ages dance festival, Superfest, is bigger than ever, spanning four days, three venues, and featuring acts like Glass Candy, Chromatics, White Rainbow, and Strategy. Best of all, it all goes to benefit Music in the Schools, because when government bureaucracy can't save us, music will. MARJORIE SKINNER

TECHNE RENDERED DAWN
(Disjecta, 8371 N Interstate) Read our article on Techne Rendered Dawn.

BEN MACY, BLAKE LYMAN TRIO
(Jimmy Mak's, 221 NW 10th) Of Scars and Permanence, the new album from jazz pianist Ben Macy, just sounds better on vinyl. It's a warm, inviting live recording captured at Southeast Portland's Reedwood Friends Church, resulting in a spacious and graceful series of improvisations. Macy anchors his compositions in the crowd-pleasing tradition of Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi, but he also cites modernists like Bobo Stenson and Tomasz StaƄko, and the welcome result is that Of Scars and Permanence is exploratory but never meandering. One almost wishes for a performance at Reedwood Friends to duplicate the openness and clarity of the recording, but tonight's album release show at Jimmy Mak's should sound nearly as good.
