This Thursday, January 10, one of Portland's trustiest and hardiest record labels, Hovercraft Records, is hosting a showcase at ye olde Doug Fir Lounge, with a stacked bill of the label's finest, loudest bands. It's actually a spectacular lineup—Clorox Girls, the Suicide Notes, Guantanamo Baywatch, Boom!, Hey Lover, Courtney and the Crushers, Pataha Hiss, the No Tomorrow Boys, plus a reading from Justin Maurer—which goes to show just how excellent Hovercraft's roster goes. Run by Tim and Mark Janchar, the label is one of the most stalwart champions of underground music in Portland, coalescing in the kind of scene that only the very best DIY labels can foster.
So this Hovercraft showcase is an excellent reason to celebrate the Janchars' efforts, and best of all, it's only a measly five bucks! That works out to, like, 60-something cents per band. PLUS for the first 250 people through the door, they're giving away cassette copies of the new Hovercraft comp, Songs for Friends. All 23 tracks on the comp are available for free download on Bandcamp right now, but your very own cassette copy is pretty much assured when you show up at the Doug Fir on Thursday. (Capacity at the DF is around 300, so all but the last 50 stragglers should get one.)
And speaking of bargains, we've got a very special giveaway for one lucky reader of End Hits. Hovercraft is giving away five of their recent 7-inches, plus a bunch of Hovercraft stickers and buttons, plus a rad T-shirt. Would you like to win? You would like to win. To enter, send an email to this address with "Hovercraft giveaway" in the subject line. Please include your first and last name, plus your T-shirt size (the shirts are made by American Apparel, which can be a little tighter than some other brands, so keep that in mind). This contest will close at 3 pm on Wednesday, at which point we'll select a winner at random.
So ready, set, go! And to see the full (awesome) poster for the show, done by Guantanamo Baywatch's Jason Powell and Chevelle Wiseman, click the jump.
