"VioHazard" and Electric Ill played a late-night show at Bunk Bar on Monday. It was rumored, and proven to be true, that Monday night's show was an all-live, without-a-laptop version of Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro's well-known duo Talkdemonic, expanded to a four-piece. The last time I saw Talkdemonic play was on the very same stage back in the fall, during MFNW. It was a rough week in general, and they were one of the last sets of the night—I almost didn't go. But Talkdemonic blew me away. I have been looking forward to seeing them again, and their evolution into a four-piece didn't disappoint.
The addition of Jay Winebrenner on bass and Dustin Dybvig playing banjo and synth elevated their already sweeping sound, and the group dynamic was on point. Every song sounded devastatingly full and rich, a quality that laptops can't always achieve. They're onto something great—an orchestrated pushing and pulling of the heartstrings—I was riding the high of this show for a few days.
This not-so-sneaky debut was the kick-off for a NW tour with the Helio Sequence, and the next opportunity to see them play in Portland is this Saturday, February 9 at Cleveland High School. The show is part of a benefit for Music in the Schools, and more info and ticketing can be found here.
