Black Prairie Turn October into ROCKtober, and More Venue Anniversaries

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Tue, Oct 1, 2013 at 11:24 AM

whitetundra.jpg

It's October, and many venues in town are celebrating their anniversary—including the Doug Fir, which celebrates its ninth anniversary starting tonight; Mississippi Studios, which hosts a 10th anniversary hootenanny on Wednesday, October 30; and LaurelThirst Public House, which turns the big 2-5 this month and will be celebrating its silver anniversary all month long.

LaurelThirst has a busy schedule this month with lots of great shows, including a few very noteworthy events within its stacked calendar: Dolorean plays a free happy-hour set on Wednesday, October 30; Michael Hurley performs another happy hour set on Friday, October 18 (as well as sharing the bill with the Horse's Ha on Tuesday, October 8; and some nefarious-sounding ensemble called White Tundra plays a free happy-hour set on Wednesday, October 9.

What's White Tundra, and why are they playing Black Prairie songs? Turns out it is Black Prairie, but with their instruments plugged in and cranked up. They'll be playing their acoustic folk favorites, but with lots of electricity connected to their strings. Black Prairie member Chris Funk describes it as a "bad idea." Maybe it is, and I can't wait to hear it:

Exactly how loud can a banjo get through a half stack and did we even want it louder in the first place? What does Jenny’s “Dirty River Stomp” sound like on a real Hammond B3 at 110 db? Will Nate slap or fuzz tone the intro solo to “Ostinato Del Caminito”? Does Captain Bluegrass simply implode when he touches an electric guitar or run in place while tapping solos? Or, will Annalisa’s Chinese made $64.00 electric white violin explode on the first song?
Black Prairie also performs a slightly more prestigious gig this month, joining the Oregon Symphony on October 19 for their "Portland's Indies" night. They're going into the studio in November to record their third album with producer Vance Powell, who's also produced the White Stripes and Kings of Leon, so who knows? Maybe this White Tundra thing will stick.

More info and schedules of the Doug Fir's, Mississippi Studios', and LaurelThirst's anniversaries after the jump!

LaurelThirst Public House 25th Anniversary

2958 NE Glisan Portland 97232
October 1-31, 2013 - see schedule below

The LaurelThirst Public House will be celebrating 25 years of Portland music and community the entire month of October.

Started in 1988, The LaurelThirst (or “The Thirst” as it is has affectionately become known) hitched it’s wagon to the local Portland Americana music scene and hasn’t looked back. Word spread about the new club and more shows were added leading to the present, when the pub hosts music twice a day, almost every day. Of the 12 - 14 shows presented a week, all but 3 are free shows. The Thirst has become so loved for it’s support of the local live music scene by the musician’s that frequent it, that many of them refer to it as “their living room”. What started as a couple musicians playing in the window for tips, has now grown up to be one of the most dependable local venues to see great music.

The celebration, as the pub itself, will be a low key mixture or old and new and focus on the unique bond that has developed between the pub, musicians and the live music loving community in Portland. The month long festivities will kick off on Tuesday October 1st at 6PM with one of Portland’s premier bluegrass bands, Jackstraw. Jackstraw plays every Tuesday from 6-8PM but the kickoff will involve a third set lasting until 9PM.
