Finding the Punk Core of Portland Art at S1
Action Bronson performed at the Roseland last night, taking the stage after a nearly two-hour DJ set from Party Supplies got the impatient crowd riled up. But what happened at the END of the show? Minh Tran reports.
Action Bronson, a very public consumer of marijuana, was tossed numerous joints throughout his relentless set of classic New York hiphop. The first time he lit one up, a security guard tried to snatch it from his hand, which prompted Bam Bam to mock him in front of the crowd: "Are you trying to grab my crotch?! I know Portland was weird but...." Big laughs, poor security guard is the butt of the joke for all of Roseland.
So sure enough, after a heartwarming clap-along to his Tracy Chapman flip "Amadu Diablo," the obvious end to his set, a few more joints/blunts were tossed his way and he lit one up. The same security guard—now in vigilante mode looking to redeem his dignity, perhaps—ran up on stage, lightly choked Big Body from behind, and grabbed the joint out of his mouth. At first it seemed like AB didn't realize this was a hostile action, but then he turned around and shoved the security guard. After a pro-wrestling style stare-down, Action gave the guard a much more serious shove which knocked him down. Then Party Supplies and other stagehands intervened as Bronson walked offstage, fist raised.
