Video Vriday! Sleep, Is/Is, and the Century

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Fri, Apr 18, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Things have been a little slow in videoland lately, but let's jump in with an all-new Vriday!

Portland emcee Sleep just released his latest opus, Oregon Failure, and here's the single for "Sinking Ship," which showcases the Oldominion/Chicharones crew member's whiplash-fast flow. The gangster-themed clip, directed by Artistic Outlet Media, has shades of Inception and Reservoir Dogs, as Sleep raps about "how merciless self-criticism helped him crawl out of a dark place and find a renewed inspiration for life." The CD-release show for Oregon Failure takes place this Sunday, April 20 (which is both Easter and another, different, kind of holiday, so expect lots of... chocolate bunnies) at Ash Street Saloon, where Sleep will be joined by XP, Bad Habitat, Das Leune, Kinetic Emcees, and Ether Xoxo.

MPLS band Is/Is recently relocated to Portland, and they've got their new self-titled album in tow. "Gleam" is a smearily jagged shoegaze time capsule buried sometime in between Loveless and Going Blank Again, and the video is fittingly blurry, a wash of violet and sparkles that roils like ocean waves. Is/Is have reunited with original drummer Mara Appel, and they're playing a Portland release show for Is/Is at Club 21 on May 17.

Last week the Century released a shiny new EP, Oddfellows (check it out on le Band-camp), and we're too late to tell you about their record-release show, which already happened. (Sorry! We blew it.) But take a look at the group romping around in the video for "New Nihilism," a guitar-spangled pop tune filled with good vibes and cheer. The Century doesn't currently have any upcoming shows on the docket, as band members Andrew Hanna, Lilly Maher, and Garrett Brown are about to leave for a European tour with their other band Thanks (catch Thanks' tour kickoff tomorrow night at Habesha—this Saturday, April 19), so this video is your chance to hang out with the Century for the time being. Now, clowning around with lighter fluid is fine and dandy, but there's something about black-and-white footage of grownups playing in a kiddie pool—at night—that just feels so unwholesome. Gotta love it.
